The Government of Guyana has launched a significant campaign to distribute long-lasting insecticide-treated nets in Region Eight as part of a comprehensive strategy to combat malaria.
Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony led the outreach in Mahdia, emphasizing the adoption of region-specific approaches tailored to address malaria effectively.
He underscored the government’s commitment to eliminating the mosquito-borne disease by 2030, highlighting the collaborative efforts involving mining areas due to their high risk for mosquito breeding.
Dr. Kashan James, Coordinator of the National Malaria Programme, expressed optimism about achieving a substantial decline in malaria cases in Region Eight by the year’s end.
He attributed this progress to the active measures being implemented as part of the National Malaria Strategic Plan.
The primary vector control strategy involves the distribution and use of Long-Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets (LLINs) across regions 1, 7, 8, 9, and 10.
Over 60,000 nets are expected to be distributed under this initiative, aimed not only at malaria but also at combating dengue fever.
The Ministry of Health’s steadfast commitment underscores its dedication to improving public health outcomes through targeted interventions and community engagement.
