Government Commits to Balancing Economic Development with Environmental Sustainability

By Saskia Warrick

Minister of Natural Resources, Vickram Bharrat, reiterated the government’s dedication to achieving a balance between economic development and environmental sustainability during the recent Blue Talks Series held under the theme “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”

Minister Bharrat emphasized the critical role of the Blue Economy in sustaining life, regulating climate, and supporting economic livelihoods.

He highlighted that the government has implemented robust policies and initiatives aimed at safeguarding marine resources.

These efforts include stringent measures to combat illegal fishing and regulate oil exploration activities that could potentially impact marine ecosystems.

Under the oversight of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), significant strides have been made in combating illegal fishing practices, contributing to the preservation of marine biodiversity.

Regarding oil exploration, Minister Bharrat underscored that all produced water undergoes treatment to international standards before being discharged back into the ocean.

This process ensures that harmful contaminants such as oil and grease are removed, thereby minimizing adverse effects on marine life and ecosystems.

The Blue Talks Series, hosted by the United Nations at the UN House, is part of the preparations for the upcoming World Oceans Conference 2025, where global stakeholders will convene to address pressing issues concerning ocean conservation and sustainable use.
