Ogle to Eccles Highway: A Step Towards Traffic Reduction and Renewable Energy

By Josiah Williams

The Ogle to Eccles Four Lane Highway project, slated for completion by October this year, promises not only to alleviate traffic congestion in Georgetown but also to incorporate sustainable energy solutions.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali inspected the project last evening and suggested the installation of solar panels along the 7-kilometre median, a move aimed at harnessing renewable energy.

During the inspection, President Ali expressed his vision for the highway, emphasizing its potential to foster connectivity between the two locations and unlock lands for commercial and residential development.

He underscored the importance of accessibility in the road’s construction, particularly in light of anticipated development along its route.

President Ali’s suggestion to incorporate solar panels along the median aligns with Guyana’s commitment to renewable energy and sustainable development.

The vast expanse of the median provides ample space for solar installations, tapping into clean energy sources and reducing dependence on traditional power grids.

The $106.4 million US dollar contract for the project, signed in June 2022, covers a stretch of 7.8 kilometres and includes the construction of a median.

The highway will span from the intersection of the Ogle Airstrip Road on the East Coast of Demerara to Haags Bosch in Eccles, on the East Bank of Demerara.

As the project progresses, it holds the promise of not only enhancing transportation infrastructure but also contributing to Guyana’s renewable energy goals and sustainable development objectives.
