In a riveting contest of intellect and eloquence, the Future Diplomats Youth Group triumphed over the Aishalton Secondary School Youth Group, securing the final spot in the quarterfinals of the Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition 2024.
The debate, held on the moot “International Law is sufficient to safeguard states from armed conflict,” showcased the participants’ profound understanding of international relations and legal frameworks.
Isaac Atkinson, the first speaker for Aishalton Secondary School, supported the moot with a compelling argument: “Esteemed judges, the International Criminal Court plays a significant role in addressing armed conflicts through various mechanisms including diplomatic efforts, sanctions, and peacekeeping missions.
The international special courts serve justice and hold perpetrators of crimes accountable. Examples of justice served include the Democratic Republic of Congo.”
Beyoncé Roberts of the Future Diplomats Youth Group countered this position, highlighting the ongoing prevalence of armed conflicts despite international legal frameworks: “Despite the intricate web of legal frameworks and treaties designed to promote peace and security, the persistence of armed conflict across the globe underscores the limitations of these mechanisms.”
The debate concluded with Future Diplomats Youth Group scoring 213 points, significantly surpassing Aishalton Secondary School’s 185.9 points.
Beyoncé Roberts was named Best Debater for her outstanding performance.
The Future Diplomats Youth Group now advances to the quarterfinals, scheduled to take place from May 28 to 31.
The Speaker’s National Youth Debating Competition continues to be a platform for young minds to engage in critical discourse, fostering a culture of thoughtful debate and civic engagement among Guyana’s youth.
