Excitement as ExxonMobil U14 Football Tournament Kicks Off in Guyana

Schools across Guyana eagerly participated in the opening round of the ExxonMobil U14 Football Tournament, which commenced with gusto at the CARFESTA Avenue ground on Monday.

The tournament, a highly anticipated event in the country’s sporting calendar, saw 18 boys’ teams and 11 girls’ teams vying for glory and the prestigious title.

Defending champions Bartica launched their campaign with a commanding performance against L’Adventure Secondary in the tournament opener, following a ceremonial kick-off.

In a display of skill and determination, they set the tone for the day’s exhilarating matches.

The action-packed day also featured thrilling encounters between Linden’s Three Mile Secondary and VYC Academy, Ann’s Grove and Cotton Field, Christ Church and St John’s College, Bygeval Secondary and West Demerara, and East Ruimveldt and Annandale Secondary, among others.

A total of 18 boys’ matches were scheduled, showcasing the depth of talent among young footballers in Guyana.

On the girls’ side, Three Mile faced off against East Ruimveldt, Abram Zuil clashed with New Central High, and Charity challenged Marian Academy, among other captivating matchups.

Defending champions Waramuri encountered the Institute of Academic Excellence, while South Ruimveldt battled Christ Church and President College in intense contests. In total, 11 girls’ matches added to the excitement of the tournament.

The tournament organizers announced an increase in prize money for both male and female teams, with each receiving $400,000 towards a school project of their choice, along with a trophy.

Sponsored by ExxonMobil, with support from Stena Drilling, the MCYS, MVP Sport, and DDL through their Pepsi Brand, the tournament is sanctioned by the Ministry of Education and the Guyana Football Federation.

Last year, Waramuri of Region #1 clinched the girls’ title, while Bartica emerged victorious in the boys’ division.

With promising talent on display and spirited performances from all participating teams, the ExxonMobil U14 Football Tournament promises to be an exciting showcase of grassroots football talent in Guyana.

The tournament’s opening round concluded with high hopes and anticipation for the upcoming matches, as schools continue to compete for glory and the opportunity to leave their mark on the football landscape.
