The Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Guyana has inaugurated its new Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Lab and launched the Guyana Coastal Database, marking a significant step forward in geographic research.
Located at the Hogben-Drayton Math and Science Building on the Turkeyen campus, the GIS Lab is equipped with modern technology that enables students to monitor landscapes in Guyana and globally.
According to Professor Temitope Oyedotun, the former dean of the faculty, this facility eliminates the need for travel and enhances the level of research conducted by students.
Professor Oyedotun emphasized the positive impact of the GIS Lab, stating that it has already sparked new ideas among students and faculty members, leading to increased research activity within the university.
Funded by the Greater Guyana Initiative—a 20 billion dollar investment by the Stabroek Block co-venturers, ExxonMobil, Hess, and CNOOC—the GIS Lab is part of a larger effort to enhance research capabilities at the University of Guyana.
Alongside the lab, the initiative has also supported the establishment of a remote sensing lab and the development of a Guyana Coastal Database.
The Guyana Coastal Database integrates research and publications dating back to the 1960s, providing valuable insights for studies on mangroves and other coastal ecosystems.
Susan Scott, representing the Greater Guyana Initiative, emphasized the importance of recognizing the research efforts of students and faculty members, urging them to take advantage of the opportunities provided by the initiative.
UG Vice Chancellor Paloma Mohamed-Martin expressed gratitude for the partnership between UG’s Office of Philanthropy, Alumni, and Civic Engagement and the Greater Guyana Initiative.
With 11 funded projects already underway, Vice Chancellor Mohamed-Martin anticipates further advancements in research and academic pursuits in the coming months.
The launch of the GIS Lab and Coastal Database underscores the university’s commitment to advancing geographic research and contributing to the development of Guyana’s scientific community.
