As part of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Week activities, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) organized an EMS drill competition and awards ceremony at the Fire Service Headquarters on Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown.
The event was attended by senior officers of the GFS and showcased the skills of participating EMS teams in accuracy, time management, and coping abilities.
Assistant Divisional Officer in charge of the EMS Department, Cleon Thom-Fernandes, emphasized the importance of the competition in providing an opportunity for skill enhancement.
The drills evaluated how participants responded to emergency scenarios, including their performance and time management.
Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham commended the medical technicians for their dedication and effort in ensuring the well-being of citizens.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by emergency medical technicians and highlighted the importance of their training in operating effectively under pressure.
The competition featured several categories, including the emergency call drill, lifting drill, climbing drill, and donning and doffing drill.
The winners included the Melanie Fire Station, which took first place in the male category for the emergency call drill, and the Alberttown Fire Station, which won the female category.
The GFS aims to enhance its medical response to accidents through such initiatives, ensuring the provision of quality services to citizens.
