President Dr. Irfaan Ali recently visited the community of Bonasika Creek in Region 3, Essequibo River, where he pledged to transform it into a major agricultural hub.
During his engagement with residents, President Ali acknowledged the community’s significant production of crops such as ginger, banana, pumpkin, and provisions.
He committed to doubling this production and addressing the issue of storage by constructing a ginger processing facility.
This facility will enable the community to extend the shelf life of ginger, access higher value markets, and enhance its agricultural output.
Additionally, President Ali announced the launch of the Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (AEIP) in Bonasika Creek.
Led by young people and women in the community, this program will utilize 300 acres of land to produce high-value crops for processing and export.
The President also highlighted the potential for the community to contribute to Guyana’s position as a regional and international aquaculture hub, mentioning plans for swamp shrimp and prawn production, as well as the introduction of cage farming.
Moreover, women in the community will receive training in beekeeping, with the government providing necessary equipment and materials for apiary operations.
President Ali outlined a series of interventions planned for the community, including infrastructure development, agricultural initiatives, and health services.
In the coming days and months, Bonasika Creek can expect the establishment of a new wharf, internet hub, cricket ground, and assistance with various agricultural activities.
Health officials will visit for eye, dental, and health check-ups, as well as cervical cancer screening voucher distribution.
President Ali’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to rural development, agricultural expansion, and community empowerment in Guyana.
