Chinese Medical Team Hosts Open Day to Highlight Contributions in Guyana

By Samuel Gillis

The Chinese Medical Team in Guyana organized an open day event over the weekend to raise awareness about their contributions to the country’s healthcare sector over the past 31 years.

The event aimed to showcase the impact and dedication of the Chinese medical brigades in improving healthcare in Guyana and strengthening bilateral relations.

Dr. Chu Xuehui, head of the 18th Chinese Medical Brigade to Guyana, highlighted that the team’s primary goal is to enhance medical services in Guyana while fostering a strong friendship between the two nations.

Over the past three decades, Chinese medical teams have treated approximately 1.7 million patients and performed over 70,000 surgeries.

Dr. Vikesh Bissoon, a member of the Guyana China Friendship Society, praised the longstanding efforts of the Chinese Medical Brigades.

He noted that the presence of these teams since 1993 has been a testament to the enduring friendship and unwavering commitment of China to the well-being of the Guyanese people.

The teams have not only provided exceptional medical care but also shared their expertise, thereby strengthening Guyana’s healthcare system.

Since their initial arrival in 1993 with eight members, the medical teams have expanded to 16 members by 2023, with over 263 medical professionals contributing their expertise in Guyana during this period.

The open day served as a platform to enhance public awareness of these efforts and achievements.

The event also featured the participation of medical students from the University of Guyana, who were recently involved in a four-day cervical cancer screening organized by the Chinese medical team.

The students received a historical overview of the medical collaboration between China and Guyana, emphasizing the importance and impact of this partnership.

Dr. Bissoon expressed optimism for the future, envisioning a continued partnership that brings health, prosperity, and progress to the people of Guyana.
