In a groundbreaking initiative, Guyana and China have joined forces to conduct the country’s first overseas training program on Tropical Chronic Disease Research.
Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the significance of this collaboration, emphasizing its potential to strengthen a lesser developed area of healthcare in Guyana.
A team of medical experts from the Southern Medical University of China is leading the 25-day training program, aimed at enhancing local capacity to prevent, treat, and control tropical chronic diseases.
The training, conducted in a hybrid format combining online and offline sessions, involves forty medical personnel and runs from May 10 to 31.
Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Hon Guo Haiyan, underscored the importance of the seminar’s format, which allows trainees to grasp the nuances of disease prevention and treatment without disrupting their routine work.
Minister Anthony expressed gratitude for the opportunity to host such a training program in Guyana, emphasizing its pioneering nature.
He highlighted the focus on addressing the management, diagnosis, and early treatment of chronic diseases, an area that has been underdeveloped in the local health sector.
Moreover, Minister Anthony emphasized the value of the exchange between Chinese experts and local counterparts, which provides an opportunity to learn from each other and enhance healthcare practices.
This collaboration marks the first of five training programs planned between Guyana and China this year.
Subsequent programs will cover various areas such as tourism promotion, industrial park development, natural resources development, and bamboo weaving techniques.
Through initiatives like these, Guyana and China are forging closer ties and working together to advance healthcare, promote economic development, and foster mutual learning and exchange.
