Arrival Day Celebrated at Highbury, East Bank Berbice

The Berbice Indian Cultural Committee organized a commemorative event at Highbury on the East Bank of Berbice to mark the 186th anniversary of the arrival of the first East Indian immigrants to Guyana.

The event, held on May 5th, featured a culturally rich program celebrating the legacy of the indentured laborers who arrived in Guyana.

Attendees enjoyed various performances, including traditional songs and dances, showcasing the vibrant Indian culture.

Indian High Commissioner to Guyana, Dr. Amit Telang, emphasized the significance of such events in preserving and appreciating the rich cultural heritage brought by the indentured laborers to Guyana.

NCN spoke with attendees who traveled from different parts of Berbice to participate in the celebration.

They expressed that the occasion serves as a poignant reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made by their foreparents.

The event at Highbury stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Guyana’s diverse cultural tapestry, reflecting the resilience and contributions of its people throughout history.
