By Nakasia Logan

A diverse Indigenous Delegation recently convened in Georgetown to address pressing social concerns affecting Indigenous communities across Guyana.

Representatives engaged in discussions with various organizations and ministries, advocating for collaborative efforts to tackle issues such as teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, substance abuse, and domestic violence.

During a radio program on the Voice of Guyana, members of the delegation emphasized the urgent need for concrete steps to alleviate these challenges.

Gloria Duarte, a Woman Activist from Annai, highlighted the importance of encouraging victims to speak up despite language barriers.

She emphasized the significance of supporting one another and urged victims to report incidents of violence to stop the cycle of abuse.

Carl Peneu, an Activist from Orealla, shared the challenges faced in his community, including alcoholism, substance abuse, domestic violence, and teenage pregnancy.

He emphasized the need for comprehensive interventions to address these issues effectively.

The Indigenous Delegation reaffirmed their commitment to collaboration and partnership in addressing social concerns, seeking support from relevant authorities.

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, whom the delegation met, has pledged its support to address these pressing issues.

Through their advocacy efforts and collaboration with governmental and non-governmental organizations, the Indigenous Delegation aims to bring attention to and address the complex social issues affecting Indigenous populations in Guyana.
