The Ministry of Education (MOE) is gearing up to implement an intensified literacy programme in schools, aiming to ensure that every child reaches the appropriate reading standard by Grade 4.
Education Minister Priya Manickchand made this announcement during the launch of two books by the late Dr. Walter Rodney earlier today.
Minister Manickchand emphasized that addressing literacy challenges has been a top priority for the Ministry.
The new programme will focus on enhancing teaching methods, conducting diagnostic assessments, and encouraging parental involvement in the education process.
In her statement, Minister Manickchand highlighted the importance of promoting unity and cultural diversity in schools and society.
She underscored the significance of incorporating Dr. Walter Rodney’s books, “Lakshmi Out of India” and “Kofi Badu Out of Africa,” into the education system.
These books, she noted, offer valuable lessons on harmonious living and cultural appreciation.
The launch event took place at St. Stephen’s Primary School, Dr. Rodney’s alma mater, in line with parliamentary Resolution No. 23.
Patricia Rodney and Asha Rodney, the wife and daughter of Dr. Rodney, collaborated with the Ministry to re-edit and update the books, granting full rights to the MOE for printing.
As the MOE moves forward with its literacy initiative and the inclusion of Dr. Walter Rodney’s books, it aims to foster a conducive learning environment that empowers every child to succeed academically.
