Ministry of Education Addresses Challenges and Support for Children with Autism during Autism Acceptance Month

By Fabiana Mcklmon

During Autism Acceptance Month, Assistant Chief Education Officer with Responsibility for Special Needs, Keon Cheong, acknowledges the ongoing efforts of the Education Ministry in supporting children with autism to achieve their academic goals.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) poses challenges related to social communication, interaction, and repetitive behaviors due to differences in the brain.

Behavior management therapy is often crucial for these children, but Cheong notes the scarcity of professionals in this field both in Guyana and the wider region.

In an interview, Cheong emphasizes the importance of parental support systems in navigating the educational challenges faced by children with autism.

He calls on parents to advocate for their children and practice patience while engaging with education authorities.

Cheong underscores the Education Ministry’s commitment to supporting families of children with autism and invites them to collaborate in finding solutions collectively.

Despite the existing gap in professionalizing behavior management therapy, efforts are underway to address this issue comprehensively.

As Autism Acceptance Month continues, the Education Ministry remains dedicated to providing resources and support for children with autism, working towards a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for all.
