Guyana’s aviation sector is set for significant growth with United Airlines joining the fray, and Minister Juan Edghill, overseeing the sector, is optimistic about the country’s potential as a major hub for stopovers.

At the launch mixer of United Airlines on Tuesday evening, Minister Edghill highlighted Guyana’s strategic positioning and expressed the government’s commitment to leveraging this advantage to position the country as a key transit hub for international flights.

As airlines like United Airlines express interest and forge partnerships with Guyana, the possibility of establishing the country as a major transit hub for overlays is being explored.

Minister Edghill emphasized the potential for Guyana to serve as a preferred stopover for long-haul flights, reducing travel time and providing valuable transit options.

With the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) witnessing an increase in travel to pre-pandemic levels, Minister Edghill outlined ongoing efforts to enhance travel experiences for passengers.

This includes infrastructure development, upgrading baggage handling systems, and considering the construction of a new terminal to accommodate additional airline carriers.

Minister Edghill underscored the importance of expanding airport facilities to avoid congestion and inconvenience for travelers.

He highlighted the need for timely action, citing instances where all available gates were occupied, emphasizing the urgency of advancing the construction of Terminal B at CJIA.

In addition to the terminal expansion, other ongoing projects at CJIA include the construction of an airline office building and an administration building for airport staff, aimed at enhancing operational efficiency and passenger experience.

The partnership with United Airlines and the ongoing infrastructure projects at CJIA signify Guyana’s commitment to becoming a prominent player in the global aviation landscape.
