Government’s Commitment to Water Access Highlighted on World Water Day

By Delicia Janniere

Housing and Water Minister Collin Croal has announced plans to drill at least 40 wells in the hinterland region this year, as part of the government’s efforts to ensure equal access to potable water countrywide.

This announcement came during the unveiling ceremony of a billboard in observance of World Water Day.

Minister Croal emphasized the government’s dedication to providing access to water across the entire country.

While acknowledging that 97.5% of the coastland already has access to potable water, he underscored the need to extend this access to the hinterland regions, where efforts are being intensified.

Despite the progress made, Minister Croal acknowledged that the current number of wells planned to be drilled is insufficient to meet the demand for water in the hinterland.

However, he reassured the public of the government’s commitment to addressing this issue, provided there are no resource constraints.

Minister Croal also stressed the importance of considering groundwater supply when drilling wells, particularly in light of prolonged dry seasons.

He noted advancements in technology and precision in well location selection, despite occasional challenges in achieving desired output.

This year, World Water Day is observed under the theme “Water for Peace,” emphasizing the global commitment to ensuring water needs are continuously met and conservation efforts are upheld.

Reporting from GWI Headquarters on Vlissengen Road, Delicia Janneire underscores the government’s dedication to improving water access and conservation efforts in Guyana.
