In a collaborative effort to maintain a healthy environment and ensure the well-being of vendors and visitors, the Georgetown Municipality and the Guyana Fire Service recently conducted a clean-up exercise at the Stabroek Market.
Acting Town Clerk and Solid Waste Director, Walter Narine, provided insights into the initiative, highlighting the focus on addressing internal drainage issues within the market.
Narine explained that the clean-up initiative was prompted by the realization of severe internal drainage problems at the Stabroek Market, adversely affecting vendors.
The initiative aimed to tackle three main objectives: cleaning all internal drains, addressing external drainage issues, and washing the entire market premises.
Additionally, the Public Health Department from the municipality was tasked with fumigating the market to ensure a hygienic environment.
During the exercise, Narine took the opportunity to urge vendors and citizens to refrain from littering, emphasizing the collective responsibility in maintaining the cleanliness of the market.
He emphasized the detrimental impact of disposing garbage in public drainage systems, urging vendors to dispose of waste properly to prevent blockages and environmental pollution.
The clean-up exercise at the Stabroek Market is part of a broader effort to enhance cleanliness and sanitation in municipal markets across Georgetown.
Similar initiatives are expected to be carried out throughout the week at other municipal markets, including the Bourda Market.
The collaborative efforts between the Georgetown Municipality and the Guyana Fire Service underscore the commitment to creating a clean and healthy environment for all stakeholders involved in market activities.
