Over 100 young individuals hailing from Regions Two and Three celebrated a significant milestone as they graduated from various technical skill programs offered by the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).
At the graduation ceremony held at the Essequibo Technical Institute, 121 youths proudly received certifications in welding and fabrication, electrical installation, motor vehicle repairs, joinery, and boat building.
The event marked a significant achievement for these graduates, signifying their readiness to contribute to the workforce with their newfound skills.
Labour Minister Joseph Hamilton, addressing the gathering, stressed the importance of challenging societal norms that differentiate between ‘clean’ and ‘dirty’ work.
He emphasized the need to reorient educational systems to accommodate diverse interests, ensuring that practical skills are valued as much as academic pursuits.
Minister Hamilton shared his observation that many students possess a preference for hands-on, practical learning experiences rather than traditional academic settings.
He urged for a shift towards a more inclusive approach to education that caters to varied skill sets and interests.
Toshao of Mainstay, Yvonne Pearson, also addressed the graduates, commending their accomplishments and highlighting the marketability of their skills in the job market or entrepreneurial ventures.
Pearson encouraged more women to seize the opportunities offered by the BIT programs, emphasizing the importance of gender inclusivity in technical fields.
Ten of the newly certified welders have already secured full-time employment at a welding shop within the region, showcasing the immediate impact of the BIT programs on employment opportunities.
Additionally, two graduates have embarked on entrepreneurship by establishing their own workshop, while eight others have found employment with private companies.
The graduation ceremony not only celebrated the achievements of these young individuals but also underscored the importance of technical training in empowering youth and fostering economic growth and development in the region.
