Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Chairman, Dr. Irfaan Ali, has announced that regional leaders will convene in Kingston, Jamaica, on Monday to discuss the escalating crisis in Haiti.
The announcement was made during a live statement by President Ali on Friday evening.
The crisis in Haiti has been marked by a surge in gang violence, resulting in the release of thousands of prisoners, the destruction of police stations, and an attempted takeover of the country’s airports by gang leaders.
Recognizing the severity of the situation, President Ali emphasized the need for urgent action to restore stability and normalcy to Haiti.
President Ali stated that CARICOM heads of government are collaborating with various stakeholders and the Prime Minister of Haiti to address the crisis.
While progress has been made, President Ali emphasized that more needs to be done to achieve the desired outcomes.
The meeting in Kingston aims to engage at the highest level possible to demonstrate unity between CARICOM and the international community in support of Haiti.
President Ali reiterated CARICOM’s commitment to stand in solidarity with the Haitian people during this challenging time.
Haiti’s government recently extended a state of emergency as armed gangs continue to call for the overthrow of Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s government, who is currently in Puerto Rico.
