CARICOM Secretary-General Calls for Collective Action at 46th Heads of Government Meeting

The 46th regular meeting of the conference of heads of government of CARICOM commenced on Sunday at the National Cultural Centre, heralding a crucial gathering of leaders from across the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

The event, one of the most significant regional gatherings, kicked off with a vibrant cultural presentation celebrating the rich heritage and unity of the region.

In her opening address, CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett emphasized the historic significance of the occasion as CARICOM commemorates its 51st anniversary.

Dr. Barnett called for collective action to ensure that the integration movement remains inclusive and beneficial to all citizens across the region and its diaspora.

Dr. Barnett urged the assembled leaders to draw upon the wisdom accumulated over CARICOM’s 50 years of existence, learning from past successes and areas requiring improvement.

She emphasized the importance of moving forward with passion and determination to overcome the challenges of today’s global landscape.

The three-day CARICOM Heads of Government Conference promises to serve as a platform for meaningful dialogue and decisive action, reaffirming the region’s commitment to solidarity and progress.

Matters on the agenda include discussions on the region’s resilience, adaptability, and development, as well as deliberations on sustainable solutions to address prevalent threats and challenges.

Expressing gratitude to the host, President Irfaan Ali, Dr. Barnett commended the excellent arrangements made for the conference.

She also acknowledged the leadership of outgoing Chairman Roosevelt Skerrit, Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The conference has attracted several high-level officials, including Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, U.S.

Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Adel Al-Jubeir.

Over the course of the meeting, discussions will cover a wide range of topics including the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), climate change, regional security, agriculture, food and nutrition security, and regional integration.

The conference, set to run until February 28, aims to chart a course for the future direction of the CARICOM community, fostering collaboration and solidarity among member states.

As the leaders convene, they seek to address pressing issues facing the region and reaffirm their commitment to advancing the collective interests of CARICOM nations.
