CDC Igniting Mash in Cinderella City

The Cinderella City Community Development Council recently hosted its inaugural “Mash fest,” aiming to foster unity and celebration within the community.

Ahead of Republic Day on February 23, residents of Cinderella City in Amelia’s Ward came together to host the Mash fest, serving as a precursor to the national celebration on Friday and the town’s own festivities on March 3, 2024.

Organized by the Community Development Council, the event was spearheaded by secretary Darren Henry, who expressed enthusiasm for the local Mashramani event.

“The Mash fest was a testament to the vibrant spirit of our community,” remarked Henry.

Despite a delayed start, the event drew participants of all ages, bedecked in colorful costumes and glitter as they paraded through the streets.

Despite its inaugural status, the Mash fest was hailed as a success and is slated to become an annual tradition.

Mashramani, commonly known as “Mash,” is a celebration of Guyana’s republican status.

The word originates from an Amerindian term meaning “celebration after cooperative or hard work.”

It is a festive occasion that encompasses all ethnic groups in Guyana, featuring vibrant costume competitions, float parades, masquerade bands, and street dancing accompanied by steel band music and calypsos.

The Mash fest in Cinderella City not only celebrated Guyana’s cultural heritage but also fostered a sense of community spirit and togetherness among its residents.
