By Travis Seymour

After a decade-long hiatus, the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) welcomes a new franchise: the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons. Kris Persaud, owner of the team and head of Worldwide Sports Management Group, aims to revitalize cricket in the region.

The Falcons’ launch on Tuesday marks the return of CPL games to Antigua and Barbuda, a move celebrated by cricket enthusiasts and officials alike.

Home games will be hosted at the iconic Vivian Richards Stadium, bringing high-energy T20 cricket back to the island.

Persaud, a US-based Guyanese businessman, sees this venture as an opportunity to make a significant impact in the cricketing world.

His previous ownership of the Jamaica Tallawahs, which ceased operations in 2023, demonstrates his commitment to the sport’s development.

West Indies cricket legend Courtney Walsh praised the decision to reintroduce T20 cricket to Antigua, reminiscing about past cricketing events on the island.

Antigua’s Minister of Sport, Darryl Matthews, expressed pride in the franchise, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on the island’s sports community.

The 2024 Republic Bank CPL is scheduled to run from August 28 to October 6, with Antigua hosting several matches.

The tournament’s climax will take place at The National Stadium in Providence, Guyana, echoing the league’s tradition of grand finales.

The addition of the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons to the CPL lineup signifies a promising chapter for cricket in the region, promising thrilling matches and renewed excitement among fans.
