A collective bowling effort paved the way for a resounding win for Berbice in the Guyana Cricket Board’s T20 Inter-County tournament, as they dominated Essequibo in the opening game.
The Malteenoes Sports Club ground witnessed the commencement of the senior women’s T20 inter-county tournament, with Berbice winning the toss and electing to bowl first.
This decision proved fruitful as they quickly bundled out Essequibo for a mere 44 runs in just 14.5 overs.
Despite some resistance from Varuni Pitamber, who scored 15, and Launrene Williams, who contributed 12, Essequibo struggled to build a substantial total.
Berbice’s bowlers were in fine form, with Sheneta Gajnabi claiming three wickets for twelve runs, while Shakia Gajnabi and Ashmini Muisar chipped in with two wickets each.
In pursuit of 45 runs for victory, Essequibo managed to pick up two wickets, courtesy of Cyanna Retemiah, who dismissed Realenna Grimmond and Yonette Welcome.
However, Shenetta Grimmond’s quickfire 22 off 13 balls guided Berbice to a comfortable victory.
Berbice’s head coach, Winston Smith, credited the team’s success to their captain and West Indies vice-captain, Sharmaine Campbell, whom he described as a mentor and rock for the team.
Looking ahead, Berbice aims to replicate their performance in the 50-over tournament, maintaining their momentum in the T20 format.
The action continues in the tournament as Demerara prepares to face Essequibo on Friday at the same venue, starting from 1:30 pm.
