Minister of Labour, Joseph Hamilton, emphasized the importance of teachers and students returning to the classroom during a community outreach event in Region Two.
His comments come amidst ongoing strike action by teachers, which he deemed illegal due to the ongoing talks between the Guyana Teachers Union and the Ministry of Education.
Hamilton stressed that the strike action was negatively impacting learning and urged parents to encourage teachers to resume their duties.
He highlighted the crucial role of teachers in educating the nation’s youth and urged community members to support them in their efforts.
Additionally, Hamilton reiterated that with dialogue ongoing between the relevant parties, a strike should not have occurred.
He explained that according to labour relations laws, once talks are still in progress, there is no role for the Ministry of Labour or the Minister of Labour to intervene.
He emphasized that strike action would result in non-payment for those who choose to participate.
Furthermore, Hamilton underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the demands of teachers, noting that 27 out of 41 demands had already been honored within the past three years.
He highlighted the significant increase in teachers’ salaries, averaging 39% since the government took office.
President Irfaan Ali also addressed teachers, urging them to reflect on the positive interventions made by the government and expressing plans for further improvements in their lives.
He urged patience as the government works towards incremental progress.
As the strike continues, it marks nine days since some teachers have ceased work.
The government remains committed to resolving the situation and ensuring the smooth functioning of the education sector.
