By Saskia Warrick

Guyana is gearing up to commence large-scale production of onions following promising results from trial cultivations, announced Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.

With a growing focus on food security, onion trials are currently underway at the National Agricultural and Research Institute (NARI).

Currently, Guyana imports onions from various countries including the United States of America, Canada, and India.

Minister Mustapha expressed optimism after the first trial harvest, noting that it showed promising signs for large-scale production.

This development aligns with Guyana’s ambition to enhance domestic agricultural output and reduce dependence on imported produce.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to bolstering the agricultural sector, Minister Mustapha assured continued support as Guyana aims to become the breadbasket of the Caribbean.

The Minister emphasized that expanding, diversifying, and modernizing the agriculture sector are key priorities.

These efforts are expected to enhance resilience and competitiveness not only within Guyana but also across the wider Caribbean region.

As Guyana moves forward with plans for large-scale onion cultivation, it signifies a significant step towards enhancing food security and strengthening the agricultural sector’s contribution to national development.
