Mission to Monitor Colombia’s Peace Plan Initiated by Guyana

In the initial days of Guyana’s presidency over the United Nations Security Council, the nation has initiated a mission to oversee Colombia’s peace plan.

Guyana’s High Representative for the United Nations Security Council and Foreign Secretary, Robert Persaud, confirmed the commencement of this mission today.

The Associated Press reported on Tuesday that Colombia’s government and the largest remaining guerrilla group in the nation have mutually agreed to extend a ceasefire by six months.

This ceasefire, which began last year, involves the National Liberation Army rebels pledging to cease kidnapping civilians for ransom.

The truce, which was originally set to expire the day prior, has been extended for an additional 180 days, as confirmed by both sides in a brief statement.
