The Black Belly Sheep project is scheduled to launch in the first half of this year, according to Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha.
During the consideration of estimates for his ministry, Minister Mustapha stated that 707 sheep are already in the country, with an additional 293 expected.
Once the full batch arrives, the project will commence in Region 5 before expanding to other regions.
Responding to questions from Opposition member Vinceroy Jordan, Minister Mustapha explained that while the budget is allocated for the rollout this year, the exact arrival time of the sheep is beyond his control.
He further informed the committee that 42 farmers are being assessed to participate in the project, outlining the criteria for their involvement.
The Black Belly Sheep project, launched by President Irfaan Ali in March 2022, aims to contribute to Guyana’s efforts to reduce CARICOM’s high food imports by 25% by 2025.
The upcoming rollout marks a significant step in achieving this goal and promoting sustainable agricultural practices in the region.
