Labour Shortage in Guyana Constrains Major Construction Projects

Investment Inc’s General Foreman, Akani Blair, recently voiced concerns about the critical labour shortage impacting the timely completion of key construction projects in Guyana.

The Bamia/Amelia’s Ward Primary School project, for instance, has faced significant delays and was granted a second extension due to the scarcity of skilled labour.

From the construction site, General Foreman Akani Blair shed light on the profound effects of the ongoing labour shortage, emphasizing that this issue did not manifest overnight but is a result of multiple factors.

The scarcity of a skilled workforce is making it increasingly challenging to adhere to project timelines.

Blair emphasized the need for urgent solutions to address the labour shortage, proposing the incorporation of migrant labour as a viable strategy to overcome the current challenges and facilitate the timely completion of construction projects.

In response to this pressing concern, the government is taking proactive measures by initiating the creation of a National Labour Committee under the Ministry of Labour.

The primary objective of this committee is to focus on addressing the shortage of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled labour within the country.

As the labour shortage continues to pose a significant impediment to the construction sector in Guyana, collaborative efforts between industry stakeholders and government authorities are essential to finding effective solutions.

The overarching goal is to ensure the sustained growth and progress of the country’s infrastructure development projects.
