Guyana’s President Calls for Reparations Mechanism

President Dr. Irfaan Ali of Guyana has emphasized the need for the establishment of a reparations mechanism during his address at the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogues held in Ghana.

He highlighted that there is already recognition of the injustices related to the trans-Atlantic slave trade, evident in the apologies made by those involved.

President Ali stressed the importance of focusing on creating a mechanism for reparations, emphasizing that action needs to be taken to address the historical injustices suffered by African nations.

He called for a singular vision in establishing a reparations mechanism and asserted that failure to do so would be a grave injustice to those who sacrificed much for progress.

The Guyanese Head of State urged the global community to take responsibility for the actions of the past and work towards a fair and just mechanism for reparations.

He emphasized that this initiative should not be delayed, and a comprehensive approach is necessary to ensure justice for those affected by historical injustices.

President Ali’s call for a reparations mechanism reflects a broader global conversation on addressing historical wrongs and providing restitution for the impact of slavery and colonialism on communities and nations.
