Budget Debates Day 2: Benn and Ramjattan Clash Over Security Sector Management

The second day of the budget debates in the National Assembly saw a heated exchange between Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn and Opposition MP Khemraj Ramjattan over the management of the security sector.

Ramjattan, in his opening remarks, highlighted the alarming increases in road accidents, fatalities, and fires across the country, emphasizing the urgent need to address these issues and substantially lower the numbers.

He called for a more robust and effective management of the public security sector to enhance law and order in all administrative regions.

In response, Minister Benn outlined the efforts made by the PPP administration to ensure accountability and effective monitoring of the public security sector.

He argued that stringent efforts are being made to develop all security institutions under his charge, leading to a steady decline in serious crimes over the years.

Benn highlighted improvements in work ethic, professionalism, and standards of delivery within the security institutions.

However, the debate took a turn when several opposition MPs walked out of the Parliament Chambers after being cautioned by Speaker Manzoor Nadir over disruptive behavior during Minister Benn’s contribution.
