Nicholas Fraser, Head of the Allied Arts Unit at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the partnership between the ministry, Archery Guyana, and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) to enhance teachers’ capabilities in guiding students who choose archery as a Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) subject.
A five-day coaches course was organized at the National Resource Center as part of this initiative.
Fraser, who was part of the team that presented archery to the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC), shared that the proposal for archery as a physical education subject for CSEC students was accepted.
The Allied Arts Unit sponsored six teachers from outlying regions to participate in the program, aiming to expand archery in more schools for students from the first to third form, with a focus on regions 1 and 9.
The goal is to make the sport syllabus accessible to current third form students in the coming year. President of Archery Guyana, Vidushi Persaud-McKinnon, expressed optimism about the impact of the course, not only in schools but also in communities where archery can become a way of life.
This initiative reflects efforts to diversify the range of subjects available for students and promote sports like archery as an integral part of the education curriculum.
