The Guyanese government is set to boost the digital landscape by training 1,000 young individuals in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for outsourced high-value nearshore jobs.
The initiative, part of the Education Ministry’s budgetary allocation of 135.2 billion Guyanese dollars, is estimated to cost $735 million over a two-year period, beginning this year.
Minister of Education, Hon. Priya Manickchand, emphasized the significance of ICT in Guyana’s transformation and highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital era.
The initiative aims to equip the youth with skills for emerging opportunities in the digital job market.
In addition to the ICT training, the government will continue the GOAL program and Coursera, allocating 4 billion and 350 million Guyanese dollars, respectively.
These programs contribute to the upskilling of individuals and provide access to a variety of courses.
Furthermore, the Technical and Vocational Training program will train 7,890 individuals in areas such as electrical installation, plumbing, furniture making, general building construction, and heavy-duty equipment operation.
This training, costing $500 million, aims to enhance skills in various trades, supporting the government’s commitment to human development and education.
