In a significant move to promote eye health, President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced a pioneering initiative during the budget presentation in the National Assembly.
The government will provide vouchers worth $3,000 each for eye examinations, benefiting over 205,000 school children and 76,000 pensioners across all administrative regions.
President Ali revealed that the initiative involved collaborating with local eye service providers, with the voucher covering the full cost of an eye test, which is $3,000.
This initiative aims to ensure that citizens, including those in hinterland and riverine communities, have access to essential eye care services.
The President emphasized the inclusivity of the program, stating that special mechanisms would be implemented to reach residents in remote areas, preventing any citizen from being excluded.
Additionally, individuals requiring spectacles following the eye test will be provided with an additional voucher valued at $15,000.
This comprehensive action plan aligns with the government’s commitment to citizens’ well-being at all levels of society.
The President expects the substantial investment in this initiative to contribute positively to the local economy.
The 2024 budget allocates $48.3 billion for various ongoing and new social service initiatives, building on the $38.2 billion spent on similar efforts in 2023.
The budget encompasses various measures, including pension increases, public assistance, free training for citizens, and updates to domestic violence shelters.
By prioritizing eye health through these vouchers, the government aims to enhance the overall health and quality of life for school children and pensioners, fostering a healthier and more prosperous society.
