Horse racing, often hailed as the ‘Sport of Kings,’ is on the verge of a regulatory breakthrough in Guyana as legislation is set to be introduced before the staging of the next Guyana Cup on August 11 at the Rising Sun Turf Club, West Coast Berbice.
Minister of Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, revealed that a comprehensive working document, drawing on his legal expertise, is nearing completion and will soon be tabled in the National Assembly.
The absence of legislation governing local horse racing operations has been a longstanding issue.
Minister Ramson emphasized that the proposed legislation, developed with input from the horse racing community over the past two years, will address not only the sport itself but also matters related to betting and gambling within the industry.
Horse racing in Guyana, known for its significant prize money, has operated without proper regulation.
The impending legislation aims to establish a recognized Guyana Horse Racing Authority, tasked with regulating major stables, officials, jockeys, and handlers.
The legislative initiative comes after previous attempts in 2014, and key elements include provisions to address violations, expand the Authority’s membership, introduce term limits, and implement licensing for owners, jockeys, and trainers.
This development is expected to bring clarity, structure, and oversight to the horse racing industry in Guyana, marking a significant step toward its formal recognition and regulation.
