In an announcement ahead of Budget Day on Monday, January 15, General Secretary of the PPP/C, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, confirmed that the upcoming Budget 2024 will not introduce any new taxes.
This aligns with the tradition of successive PPP/C governments, which have historically avoided imposing additional taxes.
Dr. Jagdeo expressed confidence that the budget would provide significant initiatives aimed at enhancing the social welfare of citizens across all regions.
The emphasis on social development reflects the government’s commitment to improving the overall well-being of the Guyanese population.
Responding to predictions by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton that Budget 2024 would focus more on infrastructure than people, Dr. Jagdeo countered by suggesting that if the government continues supporting healthcare expansion and other positive developments, it would indeed be a continuation of beneficial policies.
As the nation awaits the unveiling of Budget 2024, the assurance of no new taxes provides some clarity on the fiscal approach the government intends to take in the upcoming fiscal year.
