Education Minister Priya Manickchand has issued a stern warning that contractors will be held accountable for delayed school construction projects.
As the government aims for universal access to secondary education, several schools are currently under construction across the country.
However, some projects, including the rebuilding of St. Mary’s High School, Christ Church Secondary School, North Ruimveldt Multilateral School, and St. George’s High School in Georgetown, are reportedly behind schedule.
Minister Manickchand emphasized that delays represent a significant challenge, and contractors will face contractual obligations for any lag in project completion.
Additionally, the Minister noted that investigations into the causes of fires that destroyed some schools have not progressed beyond the initial stages.
In response to the school fires, the new construction projects will incorporate multiple fire safety elements, including fireproof ceilings, fire escape doors, staircases, alarms, and extinguishers.
Ensuring equitable access to education remains a government priority, and ongoing interventions are in place to achieve this goal.
