Government Initiates Egg Production to Boost Poultry Sector

The Guyanese government has commenced egg production with plans for further expansion, marking a significant step in establishing a robust hatching egg industry to support the country’s growing poultry sector.

Currently, Guyana imports around 52 million eggs annually, incurring a cost of approximately $350 million.

The government aims to redirect this substantial expenditure back into the local economy to enhance the domestic poultry industry and contribute to the development of other sectors.

Dr. Dwight Waldron, CEO of the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA), explained that collaborative efforts with partners are underway to develop a lucrative and sustainable egg production industry.

Minister of Agriculture, Zulfikar Mustapha, disclosed that the government has already formed partnerships with the private sector for the program and expressed optimism about its expansion.

In a move to promote self-sufficiency, the government is working with major poultry producers in a consortium to cultivate their corn and soya, essential components for feed production to support the poultry industry.

This initiative aligns with the government’s broader strategy to bolster the agricultural sector, enhance food security, and stimulate economic growth.
