Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha has announced that farmers can anticipate significant improvements in Drainage and Irrigation (D&I) this year, with increased investments in infrastructure.
The minister shared this information during his end-of-year media conference, providing insights into the progress made in 2023 and outlining plans for further development in 2024.
Throughout 2023, considerable investments were directed toward enhancing drainage and irrigation systems across the country, focusing on agricultural communities.
Minister Mustapha emphasized that this momentum will be sustained in 2024, with ongoing and new projects aimed at boosting D&I capacity.
As part of the initiative, the Ministry of Agriculture is actively investing in additional equipment to enhance the capabilities of the Mahaica, Mahaicony, Abary/Agriculture Development Authority (MMA/ADA) and the National Drainage & Irrigation Authority.
This strategic investment aims to fortify the infrastructure supporting the agricultural sector.
Minister Mustapha highlighted the government’s plan to replicate the success of the Hope Canal, which played a crucial role in minimizing flooding in Region Four during the rainy season.
The construction of 8-door sluice canals in regions 5 and 6 is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of this year.
These D&I structures contribute to Guyana’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change while facilitating the growth of the food production sector.
The commitment to advancing D&I reflects the government’s dedication to supporting farmers, ensuring a conducive environment for agricultural activities, and fostering sustainable development in the country.
