Guyana Rugby Football Union Looks to Improve in 2024

President of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Ryan Dey, expressed the union’s determination to achieve more successes in 2024 after participating in the Grenada Rugby 7’s tournament.

In the Grenada Invitational Rugby 7’s, Guyana faced tough competition, losing their opener 29-0 to Atlantis men but rebounding with a 20-14 victory against Trinidad Defence Force.

However, they faced another setback in the third game, losing 26-5 to Misfits.

The Green Machine secured a 26-0 victory against FRN men in their fourth game but finished outside the top four positions.

President Ryan Dey acknowledged that the outing in Grenada did not meet their intended goals, but it provided valuable insights as they prepare for the Rugby Americas North 7’s tournament next year.

Looking ahead to the 15’s tournaments, President Dey mentioned that they are awaiting fixtures to begin grooming the national rugby team, anticipating that it might start in May.

Over the last three years, Guyana has been actively working on developing a younger generation of elite rugby players.

Claudius Butts, a former Guyana and West Indian captain, was re-appointed as the head coach for a second term this year.

He will collaborate with Kevin Mackenzie, a former national and professional rugby player based in Australia.

The Guyana Rugby Football Union remains focused on improving its performance and nurturing a new breed of talented rugby players in the coming year.
