District 9 Dominates Cycling Event at National Schools’ Championships

In a resounding display of talent and skill, District 9 (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) emerged as the dominant force in both cycling and swimming at the recently concluded National Schools’ Cycling, Swimming, and Track and Field Championships.

The cycling segment, held at the National Park, witnessed District 9 clinching the cycling title with an outstanding performance.

District 9 secured a total of 225 points, claiming the top position in the cycling category.

District 10 followed with 201 points, securing the second spot, while District 6 earned 157 points, landing them in third place.

The impressive achievement of District 9 was underscored by a remarkable medal haul, including 14 gold, 5 silver, and 1 bronze.

The cycling event showcased exceptional performances from athletes such as Lelian Jordan, Rayane Thomas, and Maggie Joseph in the women’s category.

Their prowess and dedication contributed significantly to District 9’s success.

In the Boys 5000M Open Race, Ajani Cutting of District 14 claimed the gold medal, with Alexander Leung (District 11) securing the silver and Sidwell Sandy (District 6) earning the bronze.

The Girls 3000M Open and Girls 2000M Open saw Rayane Thomas from District 9 securing gold in both events.

In the Girls U-14 category, Lilane Thomas stood out with gold medals in the 1500M, 2000M, and 1000M events, while Maggie Joseph excelled in the 800M and 400M events.

Meanwhile, in the swimming segment held at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal, District 11 (North Georgetown) showcased their superior talent and successfully retained their title.

They outperformed District 10 (Upper Demerara/Kwakwani) and East Georgetown (District 12), securing the top spot in the swimming competition.

The National Schools’ Championships play a crucial role in providing a platform for young athletes to showcase their talents across various sports disciplines.
