In a historic event, the Guyanese flag, the Golden Arrowhead, was proudly hoisted atop Pakaraima Mountain for the first time.
Located in southwestern Guyana, the mountain borders northern Brazil and eastern Venezuela.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Dr. Irfaan Ali, Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force Brigadier Omar Khan, and other officials witnessed this momentous occasion.
President Ali, who recently engaged with Guyanese in Regions One and Seven, assured soldiers stationed at the border that his government is actively working with international partners to ensure their safety amid escalating tensions related to the Guyana/Venezuela border controversy.
Guyana has applied to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for urgent provisional measures to counter Venezuela’s planned referendum on December 3.
President Ali emphasized the importance of supporting the soldiers and assured residents that the ICJ would soon render its order on the provisional measures.
The government’s recent court action follows decades of stalemate in the border controversy with Venezuela.
In response, Guyana is increasing awareness of the matter and working to assure citizens of their safety.
The nation remains committed to peacefully resolving the border dispute.
