Record Rice Harvest Exceeds Targets in Guyana

Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha announced a significant achievement in Guyana’s agricultural sector, reporting that 98% of the current rice crop has been successfully harvested.

This surpasses the target set by the Guyana Rice Development Board, reflecting the country’s thriving rice production.

The second crop saw the cultivation of over 200,000 acres of rice, resulting in an impressive harvest of approximately 647,000 tonnes.

Minister Mustapha attributed this success to favorable weather conditions and the unwavering support provided by the government to the agricultural community.

Acknowledging the pivotal role played by the Guyana Rice Development Board, Minister Mustapha highlighted the organization’s dedicated efforts in educating farmers about optimal agronomic practices.

This proactive approach has contributed to the increased yield witnessed in the recent harvest.

In addition to the positive impact on production levels, Minister Mustapha noted a reduction in pest-related issues affecting the new rice varieties.

The government’s commitment to addressing challenges and supporting farmers has led to a more resilient and thriving rice sector.

The minister also mentioned the successful launch of the new GRDB IICA 17 bio-fortified rice with zinc last month.

This innovative rice strain aims to combat malnutrition and enhance food security in the region.

Farmers across Guyana will have the opportunity to cultivate this new rice variety during the first crop of 2024.

The remarkable success in the rice harvest not only reflects the dedication of farmers but also underscores the government’s commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and ensuring food security for the nation.
