During the CARICOM Energy Month Walk, Prime Minister Mark Phillips reassured the public of the government’s ongoing efforts to bridge the energy divide in Guyana through the implementation of renewable energy initiatives.
The walk, organized by the CARICOM Secretariat in collaboration with the Guyana Energy Agency, aimed to raise awareness of sustainable energy practices and promote healthy lifestyles.
In his address, Prime Minister Phillips emphasized Guyana’s commitment to fostering the greater use of renewable energy, both on the coastland and in the hinterland.
He highlighted the use of solar energy and hydro power as essential components in bridging the energy gap and providing communities with accessible and sustainable energy sources.
One significant project highlighted by the Prime Minister is the distribution of 30,000 solar panels in hinterland and riverine communities.
This initiative aims to bring renewable energy solutions to remote areas, contributing to the government’s efforts to provide electricity to people where they live.
Additionally, mini hydro projects, such as the one in Moca Moca Region Nine, and solar projects in smaller areas like Leguan, Wakenaam, Bartica, Mahdia, and Lethem, are part of Guyana’s contributions to accelerating innovation and promoting electrification.
CARICOM Energy Month 2023 is observed under the theme ‘Accelerating innovation, driving electrification.’
Prime Minister Phillips reiterated Guyana’s commitment to sustainable energy practices and the importance of such initiatives for the nation’s development.
The government’s focus on renewable energy projects aligns with global efforts to transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, contributing to a greener and more environmentally friendly future for Guyana.
