Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, General Secretary of the PPP, has criticized the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC), controlled by A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), for its lack of accountability and transparency.
Jagdeo pointed out that the city council has not updated its asset register or audited its statements for over 20 years.
Amid criticisms in some media sections about President Irfaan Ali and his government’s direct engagement with residents in the city, Jagdeo defended the central government’s direct interventions in Georgetown.
He mentioned that the city is now experiencing massive development and improvements facilitated by the central government.
Last week, President Ali met with Georgetown residents who highlighted neglect by the M&CC in their communities.
