President Irfaan Ali joined hundreds of citizens at the Corriverton Recreational Park for the ‘One Guyana’ Diwali Jalsa on Tuesday evening, celebrating the upcoming Diwali festivities scheduled for the weekend.
The event drew a significant turnout, predominantly comprising Berbicians, who gathered to partake in the cultural celebrations.
Addressing the large gathering, President Ali emphasized the significance of unity and togetherness, encouraging individuals to use their “individual light” to bring brightness to the world.
He spoke about the importance of community life and how celebrations like Diwali provide a platform for people to come together, support each other, and share the values of their religious teachings and cultural heritage.
His message resonated with the essence of Diwali, rooted in Hinduism, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. President Ali expressed optimism that such initiatives would bring positive change to the lives of everyone.
The ‘One Guyana’ Diwali Jalsa in Berbice was described by David Armogan, RDC Chairman of Region Six, as the first of its kind in the ancient county.
The event was attended by First Lady Arya Ali, First Son Zayd Ali, government officials, regional representatives, and members of the diplomatic corps.
Supported by 26 mandirs from across Region Six, the cultural program featured singing, dancing, and spiritual reflection at a dedicated mandir on-site. Various booths offered a diverse range of Indian dishes, jewelry, toys, and other cultural items.
The ‘One Guyana Diwali Jalsa’ exemplifies the celebration of diversity and cultural richness, fostering unity and mutual understanding among Guyanese citizens.
