New Secondary School to Benefit Berbice River Students

Students in the Berbice River area are set to benefit from the construction of a new secondary school, a commitment made by President Dr. Irfaan Ali during a recent outreach to various Region 10 communities.

The Wiruni community, situated in the heart of the Berbice River, will be the recipient of this educational initiative.

Minister of Public Works, Juan Edghill, shared details during a follow-up meeting with residents of De Velde.

He highlighted that the construction of the new secondary school is a strategic move to prevent children from having to travel long distances to attend schools in Kwakwani or New Amsterdam.

Discussions have already commenced with the Ministry of Education to initiate the technical aspects of developing the school.

Minister Edghill emphasized the intent to use materials from nearby communities in the Berbice River, contributing to economic development for local suppliers.

Furthermore, Minister Edghill fulfilled the President’s commitment to provide 165-watt solar panels and fans to several communities, including De Velde.

He mentioned that every household in the Berbice River will receive solar panels, a move aimed at bridging the energy and digital divide in the region.

In addition to these initiatives, commitments were made to allocate funds for the rehabilitation of playfields in the riverine communities, contributing to the overall development and well-being of the residents.
