Over a decade after the implementation of the Sustainable Housing for the Hinterland Programme in 2009, residents and contractors from Region One gathered to share their stories of transformation over the weekend.
The initiative, funded with a budget exceeding 4 million US dollars from the Inter-American Development Bank and executed by the Housing Ministry’s Central Housing and Planning Authority, aimed to construct durable wood or burnt brick houses, one storey in height, complete with rainwater harvesting systems.
Additionally, the programme facilitated the replacement of traditional thatch roofs with more resilient zinc roofing and gutters.
Many beneficiaries expressed how this initiative has positively impacted their families, with the infrastructure proving to be robust and sustainable.
The project not only improved the living conditions for low-income families but also enhanced access to housing, potable water, and sanitization.
It was carried out in regions 1 and 9, focusing on over-crowded households and providing separate, comfortable living spaces for families.
Contractors, clerk of works, and residents alike praised the quality of the materials used in the project, underscoring their commitment to safety and durability.
