UN Resident Coordinator Commends Guyana’s Contribution to Global Peace and Development

On United Nations Day, celebrated annually on October 24, the world faces a multitude of humanitarian challenges.

UN Resident Coordinator to Guyana, Yeşim Oruç, emphasizes that peace transcends the mere absence of conflict; it emerges from nations employing diplomacy, dialogue, and international law to prevent strife.

Oruç acknowledges Guyana’s forthcoming seat on the UN Security Council as a clear affirmation of its commitment to global peace.

She underscores Guyana’s recent progress in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas like clean water, sanitation, industry, innovation, and infrastructure.

The nation also calls upon wealthier countries to fulfill their financing pledges while striving to expedite its own SDG achievements.

Regarding human rights, Oruç notes Guyana’s active participation in UN forums and conventions through the National Mechanism for Reporting and Follow-up.

While engagement with these bodies may be intricate, it is an effective process in democratic societies.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in his UN Day message, calls upon nations to shoulder the responsibility of constructing a world marked by peace, sustainable development, and universal human rights.
