PPP Dismisses Opposition’s Press Conference on Venezuela Issue as “Untimely”

The ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has described a recent press conference hosted by the opposition APNU/AFC coalition as ‘untimely.’

General Secretary of the party, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, rejected several alleged ‘spurious claims’ made about Guyana’s position on Venezuela, among others.

The press conference led by Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton and AFC Leader Khemraj Ramjattan dealt mainly with the Guyana/Venezuela border controversy and related issues.

PPP General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo says the timing of the press conference was not appropriate, especially when the matter is before the International Court of Justice.

Dr. Jagdeo is of the belief that certain remarks made could be misinterpreted, especially when it comes to Guyana’s position on its Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The PPP general secretary also rejected claims made by the opposition that the government is looking to have Venezuelans registered in large numbers so that they will vote for them at the next general and regional elections in 2025.

As Venezuela heightens their claims of the Essequibo region in Guyana the government and opposition have joined forces in defending the territory.

Both sides support Guyana’s long held position that the Arbitral Award of 1899 settled the border between Guyana and Venezuela and that Essequibo belongs to Guyana.
