Mixed Results for Guyana’s Boxers at Pan Am Games

In Santiago, Chile, Guyana’s boxing team experienced a diverse opening day at the Pan-Am Games, with Olympic hopefuls Keevin Allicock and Alesha Jackman launching their campaigns.

Olympian Keevin Allicock took the ring on Thursday, facing Panama’s Javier Ibarguen in the men’s 57kg contest. Demonstrating superior boxing skills, Allicock secured a dominant victory as the referee intervened early in the second round.

Next in line for the Guyanese pugilist is a match against American Jahmal Harvey on Monday, set to commence at 17:15. Allicock remains resolute and expressed his focus.

“My confidence is always in God. That’s where I go just to settle, that’s what I plan to do,” stated Allicock.

Meanwhile, Alesha Jackman went head-to-head with 31-year-old Lucia Perez of Argentina. Despite Jackman’s commendable performance in the bout, her limited experience against opponents at this level became apparent. The referee halted the contest one minute and fifty-two seconds into the third round, concluding Jackman’s campaign.

Reflecting on the encounter, Jackman highlighted some positive aspects.

“I didn’t get the result I wanted, and the judges’ decision, well, going back, I will try to clear up any mistakes,” said Jackman.

Despite the mixed results, Guyana’s boxers have shown determination and skill in their respective matches at the Pan-Am Games.
